Dasvidanya tells the the story of simpleton, Amar Kaul (Vinay Pathak) who works as an accounts manager in a pharmaceuticals company. Amar’s only excitement in life is making a to-do list every morning and then ticking off everything that he accomplishes at the end of the day. But unfortunately, destiny has some other plans stored for him. He comes to know through his doctor that he is suffering from stomach cancer and now only has just three months left to live.

This news makes Amar wake up to the reality that how till now he has wasted his life. Never mustered the courage to express his love, never brought a car or never ever traveled abroad, Amar has so many unfulfilled dreams left! He then sets about making a new to do list of 10 things. His last list of all the things he has to do before he dies. From making a foreign trip to telling his childhood love about his affections for her to meeting his school best friend with whom he has lost contact. The film then follows Amar’s journey towards fulfilling his wishes which also take him nearer to his death.

Completely, character driven, the charm of the film lies in its simplicity of its theme and its wonderfully etched characters. The screenplay is well woven with some moments that carry the power to remain etched in your memory even long after the film is over. The only spoke in the wheel is the Russian girl’s track as it slows down the pace of the film. There are moments however that instantly bring tears to your eyes such as a few scenes between Vinay and his mom played by stage veteran Sarita Joshi and Vinay finally expressing his love on a rainy night to Neha Dhupia. First timer Shashant Shah has handled the subject with a rare maturity.

The film is a must see for Vinay Pathak’s absolutely brilliant performance. One can easily rate it above his Bheja Fry act. Rajat Kapoor is good and so is Sarita Joshi. Neha Dhupia shows remarkable improvement as an actress while Ranvir Shorey appears completely disinterested. Saurabh Shukla is good as Vinay’s boss and Gaurav Gera as his brother.

Jokes are hilarious, coupled with witty one liners, like “Mujhe mila only shuk but no f*ck”.

Add to that superb performances by everyone in the film. Dostana is meant for our Youngistan and by the response from the crowd, they loved it.

It’s very hard to find film like Dostana these days. It is easily one of the best films to come out this year. Dostana scores in every department, be it the cinematography, direction, music or the performances, it has everything.

One more refreshing change is that Dostana treats guys like sex objects instead of girls. Body of John Abraham is fully exploited and I’m pretty sure girls loved it after listening to the claps and whistles during the movie.

Now, let’s come to the subject of the movie, which is very unusual for Bollywood and that is “Love between two guys”, or do we call them gays? Dostana treats the subject very lightly and doesn’t offer any moral values in the movie and that’s a pretty impressive move by the director. Moreover, it doesn’t offend gays and is not like those movies in which gays are portrayed as a disease to our society.

When it comes to performances, Abhishek Bachchan steals the whole show. After a disappointing Drona, Abhi is back on track and that too with a bang. It’s one of his best performances of his career, only after Guru and moreover, it can be a turning point in his career. His comic timing is perfect and it rubbishes the arguments in which people say that he has only one expression on his face.

John Abraham, who came after a year, is fabulous, too. This role clearly shows how good an actor he is. Add to that his marvelous physique which any boy will crave for, Dostana is big hit for John.

His chemistry with Abhishek was superb and that was really crucial because they were the protagonists of the film and with the gay angle, chemistry was the main thing.

Priyanka Chopra looks mind-blowing in the movie. If you thought Fashion was her best thing, think again! Priyanka takes it to whole next level both with her looks and performance. And how can we forget the scene in which she wears Golden swimsuit? I mean, you’ve to see the reaction of boys. Even girls were whistling and that’s the magic of Priyanka.

Kirron Kher, who plays the mom of Abhishek, is too good. Even with her short role, she makes an impact on you. Too bad her role is very small. And how can we forget Boman Irani? His role as a gay chief editor of a magazine is well written. Do watch out for the scene in which Kirron Kher catches his son, Abhishek, dancing with Boman Irani. A pure LOL.

And the last man, Bobby Deol, is surprisingly in good form. I heard many reviewers saying that he has a guest role which I don’t agree with. He plays an important role in the development of the story and has a big role.

Music of the film is top class. Maa Da Laadla is the best song in the movie. One better thing about the movie is that most of the songs are used as background scores just like in Hollywood movies and thus, they don’t seem to be forced. Locations are superb (seriously, I’m running out of adjectives).

Director of the movie, Tarun Mansukhani, has a lot of potential and the one to watch out for after Neeraj Pandey, who directed “A Wednesday.”

One thing which doesn’t work for the movie is the inconsistency of the pace of the movie, particularly involving the love angles of John, Priyanka, and Abhishek. I think editor should be blamed for this, because 15 minutes from the film could have been easily cut out.

Verdict – Dostana is an entertainer which you can’t afford to miss. It’s a must watch for everyone, especially for the teenagers. If you’re fed-up of brainless comedies then this movie is a treat for you. These 2 hours and 15 minutes are the ones which you’ll cherish even after weeks watching the film. As we say in our Bollywood style, “Dostana is a Full Paisa Vasool film.” Highly recommended!

The film narrates the tale of Chandni (Eesha) who belongs to a middle-class family, living in one of the tiny by lanes of old Bhopal. Chandni lives with her father and younger siblings - Anuj & Sandhya. Chandni, who is deeply attached to her school going brother and sister, is trained in classical and folk music. During a stage performance she falls in love with Prem (Sonu) who hails from a rich business family. He is an unconventional ghazal singer and is full of mischief and pranks. Everything is going smoothly and picture perfect until, on the day of their engagement Chandni’s father passes away. Suddenly she is saddled with the responsibility of being the eldest in the family. On one hand, her ‘mehendi’ adorned hands are beckoning her to the dream home for her fiance and the other hands are her siblings, whom she cannot take along with her to her in laws house. She then takes the painful decision of not going ahead with her marriage with Prem so that she can bring up her little brother and sister with self-respect. Prem understands her and stands by her through thick and thin as she goes through her struggle. He unconditionally waits for Chandni for 12 long years until she fulfills all her responsibilities as an elder sister.

Blatantly lifted from its very own 1973 film, Tapasya, this Rajshri film doesn’t offer anything new. In fact the packaging, the music and even the technique of EVAB also belongs to that era. Rajshris seems to be one production house which refuses to come out the mould of its old success formula of their hero named Prem, poor heroine, three marriages, one engagement, many rituals, one death and a happy ending! Clearly aiming this film for the interiors, the makers have smartly avoided releasing this dated film in the multiplexes. The music by Ravindra Jain appears more boring as in the first half one slow tuned song comes in quick succession of the other.

The acting however is decent. Sonu Sood pitches in a good act and so does Eesha Koppikar. Not once does she remind you in this film that she once the Khallas babe. Alok Nath is good form after a long time. Amrita Prakash is sweet. Vishal Malhotra as Eesha’s brother is also good.

Kaushik Ghatak in his directorial debut doesn’t impress much. His narrative technique is completely sleep inducing. One hopes the Rajshri’s settle for a more contemporary fare next time around.

Ek Vivaah Aisa Bhi (2008)

The premise is fun and unique but bogged down by extraneous scenes. For example the scene in the bar after Sattar’s mentor tells him to earn people’s respect if he wants to enter into politics is unnecessary and stretched. Sattar’s drunk chamcha explains this concept slurring that “aap izzat denge, to log izzat lenge”. To which Sattar says “maine frock pehna hai kya?”. Tsk…such crassness is never required to drive home a point.

And if this dialogue was written to elicit laughs, then the writer’s talents are seriously questionable. Also annoying is the too-smart dialogue baazi that’s a staple of all the assorted goondas in the film.

On the plus side is the budding romance track between Sattar and Prerna, two interesting people who find love unexpectedly. The songs are hummable and include the gamut of romantic and dance numbers.

Performance wise, the film is an extreme — while Sanjay Dutt, Urmila Matondkar, Arjun Rampal and Kulbhushan Kharbanda are immensely likeable, there are several others that spoil the show.

The warring yuppie couple, for example, doesn’t make us feel anything for them. The young wayward son’s weak dialogue delivery runs the track down. All of Sattar’s men are one-dimensional crooks we’re seen in every bhai film.

The breaking news is that Golmaal Returns is a clear rip-off of a 1973 Hindi film Aaj Ki Taaza Khabar. And though the era-old film was a decent story in itself and even remade as a Marathi film in the 80s, the Golmaal sequel doesn’t match up to either while deriving from both.

Gopal (Ajay Devgan) is married to a size-zero couch potato Ekta (Kareena Kapoor) who, influenced by her K-serials, keeps suspecting her husband at the slightest provocation. One fateful night Gopal gets stranded in a yacht with Mira (Celina Jaitley). While framing a fake story to suit her wife, Gopal spontaneously invents Anthony Gonsalves as his friend cum previous night partner. He makes his office subordinate Laxman Prasad (Shreyas Talpade) his partner in crime, posing him as Anthony Gonsalves.

While seeking inspiration so far from the original, the writer attempts to infuse uncalled for innovation by adding a murder mystery to the plot with Inspector Madhav (Arshad Warsi) suspecting Gopal behind the killing. The screenplay is reworked to accommodate the leading quartet and is revised with spoofs so contemporary that at times it makes you wonder if the script drafts were devised on the sets.

There are subtle references to the earlier episode though this one isn’t a continuation of the first part. Vrajesh Hirjee’s serpentine act is repeated from the original and there’s also a tribute-cum-takeoff on the missing member Sharman Joshi. The film takes forward its legacy of ‘Black comedy’ and also adds Bhansali’s Saawariya to the spoof-list. The humour varies from superior to slapdash variety ranging from subtle satire on Saif-Kareena tattoos to the overstated Ekta Kapoor soap spoofs. There are some intended parodies which never take off like the character names Gopal Kumar Santoshi and Mira Nair. Then there are some jokes that clearly fall flat like the Ajay Devgan - Celina Jaitley salsa sequence on the yacht.

The writer wittily evades the censor scissors by having the mute Tusshar Kapoor indulge in most of the cursing. But script supervisor Robin Bhatt keeps making intermittent appearances with some lame internet jokes. Sample one gem of a dialogue when Kareena says, “Main serial watcher hoon aur mere pati serial killer nahi ho sakte”. The first half is thankfully devoid of any song tracks and you don’t mind excusing the only action item number in the second half that is declared to be derived from Rajnikant’s Sivaji - The Boss.

In trademark Anees Bazmee - Priyadarshan brand of comedies, the climax gets together the entire cast including supporting actors to villain sidekicks for a silly and intentionally exaggerated ending.

Tusshar Kapoor and Shreyas Talpade share capable chemistry and comic timing in the film and come up with the most entertaining acts. Tusshar’s mute act ranges from the absolutely incomprehensible to the palpably peculiar antics. Shreyas has a natural flair for comedy and makes you laugh with effortless ease. Ajay Devgan is decent but Arshad Warsi is underused. Amrita Arora can’t act to save her life and while not much is expected from Celina or Anjana, even Kareena fails to impress. Her talent isn’t justified in her shallow characterization.

Golmaal Returns reloads its cast with some new girls but doesn’t replenish its humour with more wit and imaginative gags.

Okay, here is the story for the ones who are not aware about old Karz but in a remixed manner…

Ravi Varma (Dino Morea) is a rich billionaire and is madly in love with Kamini (Urmila Matondkar), they both get married and are on the way to meet his mother and sister… (who had built “kaali maa ka mandir” for her son..and was waiting for him to inaugurate) but Kamini wanted all of his money, so she plays the trick and kills Ravi in the plane (proves it as an accident) and sells of all of his property to a funny villain named Sir Judah.. (who can’t speak but he uses his Chinese musical touchpad to communicate with his 2 funny sidekicks)

Now, 25 years later… musical sensation, rockstar (he calls himself with that tag) Monty (apna Himesh bhai) arrives.. girls go mad, faint when he sings.. (haha I can understand it… poor girls…).. the audience in the theatre go berserk when he starts singing.. aah… let me get back to the movie..

So, this guy, Monty is not happy with this life.. his step mother and father are too cunning… the guy is missing love of his mom.. he always wishes to have a mother…

The guy goes to some party… he meets one girl there.. Tina (Shweta Kumar) is the name.. everyone in the party asks him to sing but he says, he cannot sing due to contractual obligations… he says.. I will play an instrument.. this leaves smile on my face… everyone in the theatre thanks god for this “contractual obligation” BUT god wanted us to go through the torture.. Tina comes in front of Monty..  and apna Monty suddenly starts singing in his super cool voice… people start going for the drinks.. I shut my ears..

Okay… finally the song gets over.. but god again wanted to test our patience.. girl leaves for Kenya.. the guy doesn’t know what to do… he suddenly finds her photo in a friend’s mobile phone… and guess what? He pens a new song.. Om Hari Om.. and while playing Karz tune on his guitar.. Monty recollects his old memories.. doctor suggests him to take some rest.. his doctor friend suggests him to go to Kenya to find Tina..

On the other hand.. Tina is singing Monty’s song.. her friends asks her to sing few more lines.. but suddenly.. our Monty arrives in the helicopter and continues from there… TIna is impressed and now they both are in love…

Enters.. Princess Kamini… Monty recollects her and to take the revenge back.. he sings couple of songs with her.. (yea, super funny Tan Tan Tan Tandoori nights too) and makes her fall in love with him.. they both decide to get married… but Monty had some other plans..

What other plans? Well.. watch old Karz for that… See, I am not recommending new one.. so don’t blame me..

Oh yea, and our Monty does some matrix stunts too… he jumps around.. kicks few guys.. oh man.. so many other things.. he cries too…

So in short.. without wasting much of your time.. the movie sucked big time.. the direction was bad… Himesh is really giving hopes to all the bad actors in the industry.. Shweta Kumar is too young to become an actress… Urmila should officially retire.. Music.. couple of songs were OK but rest of them were BAD….

As everyone knows, Hello is based on author Chetan Bhagat’s bestseller One Night @ The Call Center which is based on the BPO industry. Atul Agnihotri has tried to touch a new subject roping in all the essential commercial values successfully. The storyline is intriguing which opens through the views of the protagonist Shyam (Sharman Joshi). The blend of shattered ambitions and how people lose their love has been weaved well.

The story shows a lot of love and affection in a family comprising of mother and daughter Priyanka (Gul Panag). Mother believes that her daughter should get married to a rich NRI so that she does not have to face the poverty and hardships which the mother had to go through. Hence she refutes the proposal from Shyam.

On the other hand, Esha (Eesha Koppikhar) shuns her family and lives alone to achieve her motto of making big in the fashion world. The story unfolds showing how she falls prey to a man who promises her to crown in the pageant. In the meantime, Varun Malhotra (Sohail Khan) tries different ways to vow Esha who, initially, refuses to budge but at the end realises his sincere love.

Also Radhika (Amrita Arora) who has to try hard working at both the places, at home during the day and at the call centre during night, is at the receiving end. She is always depressed after she comes to know that her hubby Arbaaz Khan is having an extra marital affair. So she starts ingesting tablets to fight depression.

In another instance, Sharad Saxena is in awe with his grandson who lives in America but is not allowed by his son to interact with him. He terribly misses his grandson. The story unveils the ethos of each character in the globalised office. Also how these five characters teach a lesson to their Boss Subhash Bakshi (Dalip Tahil) and disclose the truth to their employer in America and how in the climax god gives a call to all of them and everything is put straight is worth watching.

Hello is Agnihotri’s second project. His directorial debut Dil Ne Jise Apna Kaha was proved a dud at the box office in 2004.But this film has a lot of potential. Agnihotri has tried to cast each character judiciously. He has also aptly portrayed Salman and Katrina who narrates the story to Sallu and gives him two options to end the film. While leaving after the narration, Agnihotri, in a sleek manner, reveals that she was not from this globe. The comical and serious blend of dialogues written by Chetan Bhagat rightly arouses seriousness and laughter bouts.

There is enough drama and thrill which has been maintained in the film. Sharman Joshi has successfully proved his potentials again. Sohail Khan seems to have improved. His performance in the film is better compared to his earlier flicks. His mannerisms – anger and dance in the film – will surely allure the audiences. All the three ladies Gul Panag, Amrita Arora and Eesha Koppikhar play their part to the best of their ability. Nothing much to vouch for or criticise in their performances.

The filmmaker’s attempt to strive incessantly to revive the culture of our country to the commercial entity, ie, America, and promoting the feeling of India being the best will surely be appreciated by the audiences.

Although the music is mediocre, it keeps you fresh. Prolific cinematography is soothing to the eyes. Nothing more could be added or chopped on the edit table. The length of the film seems sufficient and justifies itself.

Hello, being from the family hailing from Bollywood, evidently depicts its conscious and joint efforts to make the film a success by not leaving any stone unturned.

All in all the movie has drama, thrill, good actors and better messages. We recommend it as a ‘one time watch’.
